The Concrete Journey

Every day we interact with concrete in one way or another, and more often than not you wouldn’t think twice about how it got there or where it came from.

However, concrete is the most widely used manmade resource on Earth and we’ve been using it as far back as the construction of the Pantheon in Rome! Since then humans have been mastering the process of concrete production, strength, longevity, logistics, and its application in our every day lives.

Ever wondered how it gets to your door? Check out the major steps in the concrete journey below and download our great infographic!

Stage 1. Ingredients

Stage 1. Ingredients

All concrete mixes are made up of three main ingredients – aggregate, water and cement. Changing the ratio of ingredients creates different mix types to suit different construction applications.  All Hymix plants work on full recycled water systems.

Stage 2. Batching

Stage 2. Batching

It is the job of the batching plant to weigh up the individual materials and load them into the agitator truck. Plants are strategically located throughout cities to minimise the transit time to site. Hymix use a ‘dry batch’ process – meaning ‘dry’ materials are loaded into trucks and mixed before transport to site

Stage 3. Transporting

Stage 3. Transporting

Trucks have a maximum transit time of around 90 minutes before the concrete starts to harden.  All Hymix trucks are fitted with GPS systems to monitor and adjust customer orders in real time to achieve the required delivery volumes.

Stage 4. Delivery

Stage 4. Delivery

When the truck arrives onsite the driver gives the concrete a thorough mix and a final check before discharge begins. Concrete can be poured directly into the formwork via attachable chutes or into a pump which transports the concrete to the placement area.
